St.Mar Charbel Makhlouf

Youssef was born into a devout Maronite family in the mountainous region of Northern Lebanon. From a young age, he exhibited a deep sense of spirituality and a strong inclination towards monastic life. His father, Antoun Zaarour Makhlouf, died when Youssef was just three years old, leaving his mother, Brigitta Chidiac, to raise him and his siblings. Brigitta’s unwavering faith and devotion significantly influenced Youssef's spiritual formation.

At the age of 23, Youssef left his home to join the Lebanese Maronite Order at the Monastery of Our Lady of Mayfouq. Here, he took the name Charbel, after a 2nd-century Christian martyr. Later, he moved to the Monastery of St. Maron in Annaya, where he would spend the rest of his life. Charbel's commitment to monastic life was profound; he took vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, dedicating himself entirely to God.

Charbel was ordained a priest in 1859 and continued his monastic life with even greater fervor. In 1875, seeking a deeper communion with God, he was granted permission to live as a hermit in a small hermitage near the Monastery of St. Maron. As a hermit, Father Charbel led an austere life, characterized by intense prayer, fasting, and manual labor. His humility, simplicity, and deep union with God were evident to all who knew him.

Father Charbel's life was marked by numerous accounts of miracles and healings, both during his lifetime and after his death. He was known for his ability to heal the sick, often through his prayers and the intercession of the saints. On December 24, 1898, Father Charbel passed away after suffering a stroke while celebrating Mass.

After his death, miracles attributed to Father Charbel increased significantly. His tomb became a pilgrimage

site, where countless people reported experiencing miraculous healings and spiritual graces. His body, exhumed several times, was found to be incorrupt, further deepening the belief in his sanctity.

Father Charbel was beatified by Pope Paul VI on December 5, 1965, during the Second Vatican Council, and canonized by the same pope on October 9, 1977. The recognition of his sainthood brought even more attention to his life and miracles, cementing his status as a powerful intercessor for those in need.

Saint Charbel is celebrated for his unwavering faith, his profound humility, and his dedication to a life of prayer and penance. His feast day is observed on July 24th, and he remains a beloved figure not only among Maronites but also among Christians of various traditions worldwide.

Today, Saint Charbel's legacy continues to inspire countless people around the globe. His life serves as a model of deep spiritual commitment and the transformative power of faith. Pilgrims from all over the world visit his hermitage and tomb in Annaya, seeking healing, guidance, and a deeper connection with God.
